Men’s Health Week

Men’s Health Week

June 15 – 21 is Australian Men’s Health Week, raising awareness and interest in the area of men’s health and wellbeing and encouraging the development of more male-friendly services. It is also designed to encourage men to value their health and wellbeing as an important first step in developing more effective ways of taking care of themselves so they can lead longer and happier lives. One of the challenges for Men’s Health Week is overcoming the common belief that men think their health does not matter – that they don’t have time to deal with it and that work is more important. However, just like women, men face a range of health and wellbeing concerns. In fact, according to Men’s Health Week, Australian men are more likely to get sick from serious health problems than women, often due to a lack of early intervention.Men’s Health Week is an ideal opportunity for men to think about their own health and for employers to allow male workers the time they need, more often than not during work hours, for check-ups or medical follow-ups.A healthy workplace that has a positive and supportive atmosphere is crucial to growth of our industry sectors and individual businesses.

Protect yourself at work against the cold

Protect yourself at work against the cold

Cold weather can not only be a challenge to getting out of bed for work, but working in cold weather presents a range of challenges in itself.Knowing the conditions you will face and being prepared for them is the first step to remaining safe at work, and is important for workplace productivity and personal safety when the temperature drops.Wet conditions and low wind-chill can decrease body temperature very quickly causing significant risk if you work outside, and warm air surrounding your body is taken away more quickly as the wind increases. Manual labour workers in the cold outdoors need to dress warmly but also understand that physical exertion will generate a considerable amount of body heat. Dressing in layers will allow you to move freely to carry out your work while effectively insulating your body. The first layer should be a thin synthetic that will draw the sweat away from your body followed by a layer of fleece or wool insulation and finally a waterproof breathable outer layer. The body responds to cold temperatures in at least two ways. One is the constriction of blood vessels in the arms and legs which reduces blood flow to the extremities. This protects the brain and vital organs in the trunk but leaves the fingers and toes susceptible to frostbite, in effect sacrificing them. Another response to cold is shivering which generates heat. Protecting your extremities is also important. Protective gloves and footwear can keep your hands and feet warm and while there is debate about the tale that you lose most of your body heat through your head, wearing a warm beanie on a cold day of working outside is still sensible advice.

Choosing the right labour hire company

Choosing the right labour hire company

There has been recent coverage about questionable labour hire companies in the Queensland farming industry who are fulfilling farming contracts by exploiting travellers and offering a range of benefits that they never deliver on including visas and wages.Queensland Nationals MP Keith Pitt said bogus labour contractors and other organisations are exploiting backpackers coming into Australia on 417 working holiday visas and student visas. Make 2015 the key to achieve your work / life balance

Make 2015 the key to achieve your work / life balance

A new Australian report has found that achieving work / life balance is the top priority for Australian job seekers in 2015. Howard Stevenson, former chairman of Harvard Business Publishing, likens the challenge of work / life balance to walking on a balance beam while trying to juggle an egg, a crystal glass, a knife, and any number of other fragile or hazardous objects. As you progress in your career and life, more responsibilities and opportunities are tossed at you. And so at some point, to maintain your balance, you’ll have to drop something. The key is to decide consciously what to relinquish instead of unwittingly letting go of the most important item. Trying to achieve the right work / life balance is an ongoing process that takes a lot of work and effort every day, but getting the balance right often means a happier work and home life.Productivity expert Anne McGurty suggests that taking control of your daily timetable is a great start to achieving this balance. “Instead of letting the day dictate your schedule, take control and schedule your time according to your energy level and needs. That way you can dedicate 100 percent of your peak performance hours to the tasks that are most important,” says McGurty. The clearer you are on what’s important, the easier it will be to focus and the more time you’ll have to spend productively at work or relaxing with family and friends. Decide which responsibilities and relationships are most meaningful, and then block out time to ensure you meet both personal and professional commitments.Another key is not to confuse urgent with important. Just because something is urgent doesn’t mean it’s important – focus on what is worth the effort, not wasting time on small tasks that come up. That way you avoid getting caught up in putting out fires that can put you behind at work and cut into your personal time.It may take major changes to achieve the right work / life balance in 2015, however trying to make all the changes at once would be too much. Make small changes, small adjustments to the way you work, your schedule and calendar to start seeing a better balance in your life. Contact APG today to discuss the wide range of job roles we have available that may suit you to achieve your work/ life balance 2015.

Advantages of Shift Work – Flexibility and Autonomy

Advantages of Shift Work – Flexibility and Autonomy

More and more workplaces are embracing the advantages of shift work for their business, offering more and more opportunities for flexible working hours and arrangements. Shift work arrangements traditionally only existed within logistics and production driven business, however the benefits can be wide ranging for both business and workers. As businesses have needed to adapt to changing market conditions, Australian working hours have also adapted.Approximately 1.4million Australian employees work shift work, accounting to 16% of all Australian employees. Shift work can give workers increased flexibility, giving busy working parents extra time to care for young children, night owls a chance to work when it suits them best or the ability to study and work at the same time.Greater autonomy can be a feature of shift work, offering independence that can help broaden skills as some other departments’ employees might not work in that shift.Financial incentives can often be a factor in shift work as less desirable – eg graveyard shifts – can attract a financial premium versus their daytime counterparts. Greater autonomy; independence.  Shift workers often work to a rotation which means they are able to gain mini breaks by accumulating several days off in a row on a regular basis.

How innocent Facebook posts can be affecting your job hunt

How innocent Facebook posts can be affecting your job hunt

No it’s not an urban myth made up to scare teenagers and extroverted people from oversharing on social media! Facebook can damage your career prospects and leave you without the opportunity to get into a job interview at all.The whole recruitment process is based on your potential employer using your resume – which outlines your experience, skills and knowledge – to learn a bit about you and if you are able to do the job. But there is nothing that stops potential recruiters from jumping onto social media – Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest – to type in your name and see what comes up. Doesn’t seem fair – after all your social network is all about being social. But in the search to get the right employees, recruiters will generally use all tools available to them to ensure you are the right person for the job and right fit for the organisationEmbarrassing status updates, opinion sharing, over sharing and pictures of you posted at 4am after a particularly big night are not really going to impress potential employees. Most people have been on social media now for a lot of years, and the photos, status updates and information available about you will generally change over time as you grow and settle. However you need to go through your posts, photos you are tagged in with a critical eye and think – do I want my employer to know about this even thought it was five years ago? Delete all inappropriate photos and content and edit your profile’s bio and “About Me” page.Your security settings on Facebook is a quick way to protect your social world from potential prying eyes. Facebook recently released an update where all Facebook security settings were reset to their lowest security measure – all information available to all. So even if you think you’ve set up Facebook privacy, you may need to check again. Here’s how to limit the amount of information available about you via Facebook. :
