The growth of the innovative, niche manufacturing industry in Australia

Increasing globalisation and commoditisation of businesses and products have seen the Australian manufacturing industry go through a period of major adjustment and rapid change. Traditional manufacturing businesses have been the hardest hit, with processes and workflow unable to adjust to the transformation the manufacturing industry has undertaken. Following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the Australian manufacturing industry was hit with the loss of several major players to cheaper overseas models. Despite the move being made by some of the world’s biggest brands including Heinz and Bonds, there have since been successes in more focused areas of the industry. Innovative and niche manufacturing has proven to be a much more resilient and promising arena, as the quality and expertise associated cannot be outsourced. Alan Spalding, co-founder of Australian made and owned furniture manufacturer and retailer Jimmy Possum is one of the many companies that prove Australian manufacturing isn’t dead. “If price is your only differentiator for gaining sales, then the outlook has always been grim. There is always someone who can do it cheaper." 1“We sell for a higher price and we have a different customer."

Labour Hire can cure summer-time absenteeism

Labour Hire can cure summer-time absenteeism

As the weather gets warmer and summer holidays are just around the corner, many businesses face issues with increased absenteeism that seriously can affect their productivity and business operations.Would it surprise you that Monday is the most-abused day of the week and January is the worst month for absenteeism? 88 million days are lost to the Australian economy due to absenteeism, at a cost of $27.5 billion in sick leave and lost productivity according to a Direct Health Solutions’ 2013 Absence Management and Wellbeing report. The same report found absences cost $2,741 per employee a year, and 71 per cent of organisations considered absenteeism to be a significant cost to their business.Trying to plan production and service around staff absences can be a nightmare. Often it will be your customers who feel the negative effects of staff shortages, whether through bad customer service or products not being delivered when promised. It doesn’t matter why the reason; you customers won’t care. Labour hire can be the ideal way to fill of increased employee absences while trying to maintain or ramp up production requirements for the busy season.

Supporting the Australian Agriculture industry with ethical labour hire

Supporting the Australian Agriculture industry with ethical labour hire

Agriculture is an important component of the Australian economy; the biggest direct employer in rural and regional communities with an estimated 307,000 people. Indirectly, 1.6 million Australians are connected to the agricultural sectors by way of food manufacturing, processing, distribution and retail. Today, agriculture in Australia faces an acute shortage in skilled labour, so farms rely heavily on short term labour hire, with backpackers often filling the need for seasonal labour.A recent report by News.com.au revealed what it referred to as a dark industry that goes on with backpacker labour on some Australian farms. Some unscrupulous employers are taking advantage of the situation to blackmail backpackers into doing whatever they want. As with many industry sectors across Australia, the unfortunate actions of a few can taint the entire industry.National Farmers’ Federation President Brent Finlay said in a statement supplied to news.com.au that the bad behaviour of some unscrupulous farm owners is not typical of what happens on Australian farms.Australia has some of the strongest workplace laws in the world and ethical labour hire companies uphold these laws. APG provide specialist ethical labour hire for a range of Australia's largest farming operations, providing short term and long term labour hire service for both field and shed staff. Our specialist farming and agriculture labour hire team are able to fulfil a complete range of seasonal farming roles across all regions of Australia.

Beware unethical labour hire companies – Don’t risk the headlines

Labour hire has recently made headlines in Australia and across the world for the mistreatment of overseas labour in processing, manufacturing and production plants. The complaints were founded in terms of long shift work, below award wages and substandard work and living conditions. A large number of the workers were 417 working-holiday visa-holders recruited by a number of select labour hire contractors that are currently under investigation via Chinese newspapers, Facebook and Taiwanese backpacker websites.APG want to assure our customers and interested businesses that while there has been a lot of news about questionable labour hire companies, APG only operates in an ethical manner for workers regardless of if they are local or on 417 visas. This isn’t the first time labour hire companies have been in the spotlight over their exploitation of overseas visa holders.Last year, APG published news around coverage about questionable labour hire companies in the Queensland farming industry who are fulfilling farming contracts by exploiting travellers and offering a range of benefits that they never deliver on including visas and wages.
