Tradies in hot demand as building industry and infrastructure projects grows
The surge in infrastructure projects across the country has led to an increased need for qualified trade’s people including brickies, chippies and sparkies.
The latest HIA Trades Report suggests shortages of tradespeople exist primarily in regional areas of SA, NSW and WA as well as Perth and Sydney, whereas a moderate oversupply exists in regional Queensland.
In NSW alone, the growth in the building and construction industry has seen the NSW Government committing resources to create 150,000 trade jobs over the next four years to support both the growth in home building, state infrastructure projects and the forecast increased in population.
The NSW state government will pour $2.3 billion into the vocational education and training sector in 2015-16 to tackle the stubborn shortage of workers with skills in key areas such as trades. Electricians, carpenters and joiners, bricklayers, plumbers and air-conditioning mechanics are among the occupations on the state's skills shortage list and they are expected to be in increased demand as large building projects get underway.
The budget allocates $48 million over four years for fee-free scholarships for 200,000 students aged between 15-30 years-old to undertake government subsidised vocational education and training courses, including apprentices and trainees.
A further $8 million has been allocated to young people in regional areas to support them through education, training and employment.
